“Don’t go grocery shopping on an empty stomach” is something you can only understand when you live it. Suddenly every colorfully packaged food looks delicious and your cart ends up overflowing.
The very opposite can be true as well. “Don’t leave your grocery shopping until after dinner” is something I learned the hard way.

This story comes form a road trip to Texas. We were staying at an AirBnB out in the sticks and needed to stock up on food for a couple of days. Our plan was to grab a lunch in the nearest town and grab provisions on the way back.
Our meal ended up being at The Salt Lick, a legendary central Texas BBQ establishment. This was our first ever taste of Texas BBQ. The smell of the wood was intoxicating alone as we walked from the car to the entrance. Then, we got a full blast of the simmering meat and we floated in like a cartoon character smelling a pie cooling on a window.
Long story short, the portion sizes were big and the flavor more so. I quickly fell in love with our waiter and his southern accent as he kept bringing out the goods. This all ending with peach cobbler a la mode. We felt ourselves getting full but couldn’t imagine not tasting the food anymore. Pure gluttony.
That was all well and good until it came time to walk to the car. I didn’t think we had parked that far away, but this walk proved to be a test of endurance. We finally slumped into the car and all we could do was laugh. How in the world could we have let ourselves get that full?
Here we are, full to bursting, and we have to go to a grocery store and make sure we have meals for the next couple of days. I have never been less comfortable. Just looking at the shelves made me nauseous. Surely we had consumed enough calories to last us the rest of the week. I forgot exactly what we ended up getting. I do remember a consensus of getting only healthy things.
I suppose getting groceries after dinner is a good practice if you are responsible and have a list you made while sound of mind.
