Luke, the drumline instructor at Aberdeen Central High School, is thrilled as their marching band gears up to participate in the Memorial Day Parade in the nation’s capital. After selecting a patriotic parade piece, the students have been diligently rehearsing for the event. Luke looks forward to sharing more about their exciting journey ahead.
Washington D.C. Marching Band Trip (Part 1)
Luke recounts the first two days of a marching band trip to Washington DC. The bus ride included a stop at the world’s largest truck stop, Iowa 80. Despite difficulties sleeping, the group arrived in DC, dined at Red Robin, and attended the impressive Marine Barracks Evening Parade. Tomorrow promises more excitement.
Washington D.C. Marching Band Trip (Part 2)
During an exhausting day of exploration in Washington, D.C., Luke and a group of around 90 students visited key landmarks, including the Capitol, National Archives, Library of Congress, and Air and Space Museum. The highlight was an evening tour of memorials, culminating in a sense of appreciation for American history and upcoming events.

Washington D.C. Marching Band Trip (Part 4)
During Memorial Day week, the group participated in events in Washington D.C., including a visit to Ford’s Theatre and a reenactment of Lincoln’s assassination. They marched in a parade, where the band received an award for excellence. The day concluded with dinner at Catholic University and a visit to the Iwo Jima Memorial.
Washington D.C. Marching Band Trip (Finale)
During their chaperoning trip to Washington DC, Luke reflects on their final day, visiting Arlington National Cemetery. The group’s organization and knowledgeable guide enhanced the experience, particularly during the changing of the guard. Despite challenges on the bus ride home, Luke feels immense pride in being part of the marching band’s journey and student development.
