In 2018 Sam and I drove down to Texas with Alyssa and Evan (sister and at the time boyfriend). We camped on the beach of Padre Island National Seashore. It is just about as far South as you can get in Texas. The trip was full of type 1 fun, very enjoyable in the moment. Then we had one big type 2 fun moment where it was miserable in the moment, but funny later on.

We had swam and basked in the sun until it set. We ran and danced around as the day ended and night began. The crashing waves were the soundtrack to our festivities full of Mikes Hard lemonades and wet toes. We built a fire, told stories, and lived every minute of that day.
Then came trying to sleep. It is the same moment you lay down on your sleeping bag in your tent that you realize every single inch of you is covered in sand. Your arms, thighs, shoulders, pits, eyes, ears, and fingers. You go to wipe sand off and end up leaving more on because your palm was absolutely loaded. The only reason we slept at all, and there wasn’t much, was the fact we were so dead tired.
It still makes me smile thinking how unpleasant it was. Miserable in the moment, but one of my favorite stories now. The picture is of Sam and my sandals just outside of our tent. Those were my favorite Birkenstocks and it was only after the trip that I realized that I had left the in the sand that day when we packed up. Call it an offering to the beach as a thank you and definitely not littering.
