One Photo, One Story (Groceries)

By: Luke

There are so many “happy place” moments that happened in Iceland. Finding a quiet corner in the Blue Lagoon and floating in complete comfort. There was the best 2 hour nap we’ve ever taken after 24 hours of travel. OR, hear me out, shopping for groceries.

This is our haul from our first trip to Bónus, a popular supermarket in Iceland. We needed a cost effective way to feed ourselves and decided on sandwiches (and chocolate).

This was our meal when we came back from adventuring our pants off all day. We would be dead tired, make simple sandwiches and watch/listen to Nate Bargatze comedy specials. Sam and I love to explore and experience new things, but we love having a “home base” even more.

There are a couple more things that spark memories from this picture. We tried just about every flavor of those chocolates (except licorice flavor for obvious reasons). They were all fantastic. The tap water in Iceland has a feint egg smell. The country runs almost completely on renewable energy including hydropower and geothermal energy. The draw back on being so awesome is slightly eggy water. In the couple of days we were there I did not get used to it and plugged my nose like a wimp.

We also got to use a bread slicing machine in the supermarket and it was awesome. What was not so awesome was Icelands most popular liquor, Brennivín. It is a high-proof schnapps that is known as “Black Death”. It did not taste good. It was not smooth. It didn’t mix with anything to make it easier to drink. Icelanders are made of tougher stuff than I.
