In Part 4 I remembered all of the best parts of camping on the beach. That is nice and all but the best stories come from when things take a turn.
The first hard reality we had to face was the wind. We were not prepared. Our tents were flapping all around and the tent stakes did not work well in sand. We tried to weigh them down but we were mostly unsuccessful. We ended up moving the car to act as a wind wall and that stopped us from blowing away.
The wind also meant sand got everywhere. This might have happened without wind but even my eye lids and ears were sandy. There is also the bathroom situation for in the middle of the night. The nearest people to us were hundreds of yards away and had driven long enough down the shoreline that the entrance wasn’t even on the horizon. I learned that the ocean is absolutely terrifying in the dark. The constant sound of waves that was so peaceful before became menacing.

We woke up with the sun with a deep understand of how a sugar cookie feels. We broke down the tents after taking in the sunrise. We went swimming again as the day started to heat up. We didn’t have much time left with the beach but we made it count.

For lunch we went to Doc’s on the edge of Corpus Christi. We all tried seafood of some sort and it absolutely hit the spot.

After that we had to get to a camping spot outside of Dallas. The same one we stayed on the way down. That chunked out drive down a little for us to make it to South Dakota the next day. A whole lot of interstate later we dropped Evan and Alyssa off in Vermillion. Sam and I decided to just suck it up and finish the last 4 hours back to Aberdeen that night. Vacations are great but coming home is even better.
