Texas Road Trip 2018 (Part Four)

August 2018

After a night of laughing we wound down relatively early. In the morning we will be packing up and heading even more south. I have a hard time sleeping in on most days and this day was no exception. I started a pot of coffee and headed out to the porch to enjoy the morning and a book. I have a terrible time reading. I have listened to an insane amount of books but I have only actually read a hand full. On vacation I have had the best luck in letting my brain focus reading without having to reread the same page multiple times.

I enjoy this photo because it puts me back into that peaceful morning and Samie knows that I prefer candid photos over posed.

Sam grabbed a cup and joined me on the porch and it started our day right. We had a day in the car ahead of us and were avoiding packing. The river where the snake charged at us in down in that valley in the background as well.

It was about a 4 hour drive down to Corpus Christi from Driftwood. We stopped at a Whataburger once we got into town. This was all our first time there and it became my favorite fast food burger instantly. It was big and greasy and a mess, but something about that burger tasted really great. Maybe you have to be on vacation and fresh off a long drive to appreciate it most, but it will remain great in my memory.

Right after our new experience at lunch we drove past a large building that was shaped like a shark. I wish we took a picture of it. I found a photo online but it doesn’t do it justice. It was a truly huge souvenir shop. We spent a great hour walking around and shopping for trinkets.

After shopping we knew we needed snacks and beverages for our night on the beach. The plan was to spend the rest of the day at the Padre Island National Seashore. We would then set up tents and camp on the beach for the night.

We didn’t take photos and it is easy to be upset at our past selves for not capturing the memories. But I am glad we pulled up to the beach, jumped out and ran into the ocean and just enjoyed the sun and salt water. I’m sure one day I will forget the finer details of that evening but I know that the feeling won’t leave.

We drove for miles on the beach until we found a spot that felt right. We swam and made sandcastles until the light faded. We eventually made a fire and stayed up much too late with our toes warm and the persistent sound of waves crashing. I am not a beach person and would much rather travel to a cold forest than a warm sunny beach, but that was a perfect night.
