Texas Road Trip 2018 (Part One)

August 2018

Another road trip! Instead of conquering the western half of the contiguous United States we are heading South. Just about as South as you can go! Samie, Evan, Alyssa, and I are Padre Island bound. Padre Island is a National Seashore under the National Parks Service located South of Corpus Cristy.

The first day of our adventure Samie and I drove down to Vermillion, SD, where Evan and Alyssa lived at the time. We were crashing at their college apartment to take off in earnest in the morning. We spent the night playing games with them and friends. Samie and I went to bed hours earlier than they did because we had to pilot and co-pilot.

The drive seemed to fly by. I think I was the only one awake for the first few hours and that really is the best time to eat up miles on the interstate. Nebraska/ Iowa are a blur and the only memory I have from Kansas was going through a toll booth when we entered and when we left. We might have driven the entire state in one shot.

We must have been getting antsy by the time we rolled into Oklahoma but my first memory was hitting Dallas traffic. We reserved camping lots in a suburb North of Dallas. It was a nice area of preserved land around a body of water in Flower Mound, Texas.

We set up our tents and boiled water over camp stoves to make our re-hydrated dinners. We ended up driving for about 12 hours that day and were ready to get some much needed rest. We had driven almost the entire United states from top to bottom. In a couple of days would take us to the bottom of the tip of Texas. But before that we need to head into Austin to eat our way around the city. In part two we will enjoy tacos, pizza, donuts, and barbeque.
