Austin, TX Food/Mural Tour

By Luke

I tend to be a bad influence when we travel. I have a track record of wanting to try as much food as possible. Afterall, can you even say you visited somewhere if you haven’t eaten local food? It is the only part of planning a trip that I can take any credit for. And even better than the planned stops are the places that you just walk by and decide to try out. It is in these hungry moments that I find the most joy from travel. The term is “gastro-tourism”, but it sounds like a medical condition. You could say foodie, hedonist, or bon vivant. I think glutton is the term I most prefer because it seems the most honest.

Traveling to Austin was going to be my first opportunity to taste authentic Mexican food. I had seen multiple lists of top breakfast burritos and what food trucks you can’t miss. Instead of having a set schedule we just knew we wanted to try a little bit of everything as it came.

Back in college I remember watching ” Chef’s night out” videos on YouTube and being completely in awe. These people would visit their friends restaurants and getting to try a little bit of everything on the menu and then travel to the next spot. It seemed like the absolute best time with interesting people and delicious food.

Our food tour was largely decided by where these unique murals had been painted. Samie fell in love with all of the street art that is located around Austin. So as we drove around hunting them, I found food nearby.

Our first stop was Mozart’s Coffee. We grabbed caffeine, croissants, and even some breakfast burritos to start the day off right.

That lead us to our first mural of the day. The ” I love Austin” mural seemed like the perfect place to start. After our small photo shoot walked back to our car that was parked at Torchi’s Tacos, a popular chain in Austin. This was a happy accident and ended up being my favorite stop of the day. These breakfast tacos made me do a double take. A glutton is born a new,

After that we adventured more downtown to walk off some calories. We saw sights and poked in and out of shops. It didn’t take long for my stomach to start speaking up again. And in this instant my stomach and nose worked in concert to float me down the street to a pizza place producing some outstanding aromas. The rest of the gang was not feeling as peckish as me so all four of us decided on a flatbread to share. One half margarita and the other half prosciutto. This was an absolute home run and hit the spot only the way pizza can.

After much more walking and enjoying the city we went to the one place I absolutely had to go, Gourdough’s Big Fat Donuts. I heard about this place from a podcast I used to listen to. It was a gaming podcast based out of Austin and they mentioned this place more than a couple of times. It didn’t take a lot of research to know this was a bucket list stop. These donuts are the meaning of sinful. They taste ten times better than they look and they look incredible. None of us could finish our donuts in one sitting but we took them back to the AirBnB and made an excellent late night snack and an end to a gluttonous day.

Until next time.
